    Japan is ready to help Sri Lanka in debt issue

    A discussion was held between President Ranil Wickramasinghe and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi in Tokyo this morning (27).

    Sri Lanka drew attention to the ongoing discussion with the International Monetary Fund and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan said that his government is ready to play a leading role in the negotiations with the creditors to restructure Sri Lanka’s debt.

    President Ranil Wickramasinghe said that he regretted the breakdown of Japan-Sri Lanka relations with the cancellation of several Japanese investments by the previous government.

    The President also emphasized that his government is looking forward to re-start those projects which are most essential for Sri Lanka which have been canceled in this way.

    The President further pointed out that he expects Japanese investments for renewable energy projects in Sri Lanka.

    Here, the Japanese Foreign Minister said that Japan is willing to consider future project opportunities in Sri Lanka showing more inclination towards renewable energy.

    The foreign minister also stated that the activities have already started to provide more job opportunities in Japan for the skilled workers of Sri Lanka by the year 2023.

    Appreciating Japan’s support in international affairs, the President said that he expects to support Japan and India’s efforts to become permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

    The Japanese Foreign Minister praised the Prime Minister’s statement and further emphasized that Asia’s representation on the world stage should be expanded.
