    04 commemorative stamps celebrating 200 years of Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens

    On the occasion of completing two hundred years for Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens, four commemorative stamps and a first-day cover were issued at the park’s auditorium today (12) under the chairmanship of Mr. Chulananda Perera, Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Lands.

    The British colonial government established the Royal Botanic Gardens in 1821 to introduce economic crops.

    Accordingly, four commemorative stamps were launched to mark the bicentenary, featuring the Umbrella Tree and National Tree Dome, the Pond and Scenic Landscape, the Christmas Cake and Christmas Tree and the Gardner Monument in the Botanical Gardens.

    The organization also prepares and updates the Red Data Book.

    Also, a stamp was released with the monument established in 1855 in memory of Mr. George Gardner (1844-1849), who was the second superintendent of this park.

    Deputy Postmaster General (Operations) Mr. Rajitha K. Ranasinghe presented the awards to the distinguished guests.

    Group including Kandy District Secretary Mr. Chandana Thennakone, Director General of National Botanical Gardens Department, Ms. Shelomani Krishnaraja, Director General of Agriculture Department, Dr. Ajantha de Silva, Director of Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, Ms. Achala Attanayake, Central Provincial Director of Postal Department, Ms. Shamisha De Silva joined the occasion.
