80% of attendance for A/L students will not be checked this year

The Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for applications for National Colleges of Education based on the 2019/2020 GCE A/L results to next (19), says the Ministry of Education.

Earlier, 2022.08.12 had been announced as the last date.

Also, the Ministry of Education says that the principals have been instructed not to consider the 80% attendance of the students who are going to appear for the advanced level examination in December 2022.

It has been informed through a circular that the attendance of 80% of the school days must be recorded for the school students who are going to appear for the GCE Advanced level examination by the date of accepting applications.

However, this step has been taken due to the Corona disaster, transportation difficulties, and fuel crisis in the country in the past period.

The Health and Nutrition Division of the Ministry of Education is currently running the lunch program for school students and expanding it further, the amount of Rs. 30 allotted per student for one meal is not enough.

Hence it has been increased to Rs.60 from 01.08.2022. So far, 1.1 million students in 7920 schools were receiving those benefits.

An interest-free student loan scheme was implemented from the year 2017 for students who passed the A/L exam to pursue a government-recognized degree course in a non-government institution of higher education.

In its initial phase, interest-free loans were provided to 5000 students and increased to 10000 from 2020.

The Ministry of Education has informed the Ministry of Finance of the need to further implement this loan program in order to carry out the higher education activities of these students this year.

Accordingly, the Minister of Education submitted a Cabinet Memorandum on 01.08.2022.

Secretary of Education Mr. M. N. Ranasinghe expressed these views at the Ministry of Education.
