Japan & India agree to take the lead in assisting Sri Lanka

India and Japan have responded positively to calls for the establishment of a foreign aid forum to assist in resolving the crisis in Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says he is grateful for that.

The Prime Minister had proposed to the United States, India, Japan, and Australia for a four-member coalition to take the lead in setting up a foreign aid forum.

During a meeting with Indian Finance Minister Sita Raman today, the Prime Minister lauded India’s support during the current difficult times and said he hoped to further strengthen Indo-Lanka relations.

Meanwhile, a stock of medical supplies over 26 tons worth 260 million Sri Lankan rupees was handed over to Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella in Colombo today by Acting High Commissioner of the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka Vinod K. Jacob.

The humanitarian aid consignment, which arrived on the island in the INS Gharial, also contained a consignment of kerosene for the use of Sri Lankan fishermen.

The aid will be distributed among the beneficiaries in the coming days and India continues to be committed to the Sri Lankan people, the Indian High Commission said.
