    21st Amendment to the Cabinet tomorrow

    It is reported that the 21st Amendment to the Constitution is due to be presented to the Cabinet tomorrow.

    The Prime Minister, Minister of Justice Wijedasa Rajapaksa, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva, Attorney General, Legal Draftsman and several lawyers have been involved in drafting the final amendment to the Constitution.

    The new bill also includes a ban on parliament for dual citizens, and the establishment of independent commissions such as the Audit Commission and the Planning Commission.

    The Minister of Justice, Prisons and Constitutional Reforms, President’s Counsel Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa has stated that the 21st Amendment to the Constitution contains more democratic features that go beyond the 19th Amendment.

    The power to appoint the Governor of the Central Bank is vested in the Parliamentary Constitutional Council by the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

    The current Governor of the Central Bank is appointed by the President.
