Sri Lanka ranked 31st in the Global Weather Risk Index – Environment Minister

In 2017, Sri Lanka was ranked 109th in the World weather Risk Index as a country with a high risk of weather disasters. We are ranked 31st in the 2019 Weather Risk Index, said Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

The Minister expressed these views at a media briefing held at the Ministry of Environment today (10) regarding the problems that have arisen due to the current weather risks in our country.

The National Building Research Organization estimates that 30-38 percent of the country’s population lives in landslide-prone areas. It is about 20-30 percent of the total land area.

Many parts of the island have been inundated due to the recent rains. Floods, landslides, landslides, and landslides have also taken a heavy toll on people’s lives.

According to the rainfall data received yesterday (09), many areas have received more than 200 mm of rainfall.

We cannot make weather forecasts. Also, the rain is likely to increase in the next few days.

All of these situations occur as a result of global warming.
