Kilo of Brown sugar for Rs. 130 from next Wednesday

The government has taken steps to provide a kilo of brown sugar at Rs. 130 from next Wednesday through Sathosa and cooperatives shops.

State Minister of Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna stated this at a media briefing held today (29).

The monthly sugar consumption in the country is 45,000 metric tons. Of this, 23,000 metric tons are consumed by the people and the rest is for other purposes. Accordingly, the daily sugar consumption of the people in this country is 1,500 metric tons.

“Three more warehouses have been sealed today. It was reported that there were 600 metric tons of sugar in those warehouses. All three warehouses are in the Seeduwa area. As a result of the information received yesterday, 4,800 metric tons of sugar was sealed in the warehouse,” the Minister of State said.

The Minister said that in a background of fraudulent traders raising the price of a kilo of sugar to Rs. 220, pretending to have a shortage of sugar in the country, 4,800 tons of sugar was found stored in a warehouse in the Mabola area in Wattala yesterday (28).
