The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) today won control of the Tangalle Municipal Council, which was controlled by the United National Party.
Until now the chairmanship of the Tangalle Urban Council was held by the UNP’s Mr. R. Wedaarachchi. His membership was revoked by the UNP due to his party affiliation with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. Accordingly, the post of Chairman of the Tangalle Urban Council became vacant.
A vote was taken today to fill that vacancy. There were two candidates from the UNP and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. As both candidates won same number of votes, a coin was tossed to elect the winner.
Accordingly, Mr. W. P. Ariyadasa of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna was elected as the new Mayor of Tangalle Urban Council.
The election was held under the supervision of Southern Local Government Commissioner Senaka Palliyaguru.
