Tobacco Companies Win – Prohibition Withdrawed

New Zealand’s new government has decided to withdraw the smoking ban that was previously imposed for future generations in the country.

Accordingly, steps have been taken to nullify the decision to prohibit anyone born in the country from buying cigarettes after the year 2008, introduced by the Jacinda Ardern government.

This new decision has been announced by Christopher Luxon, who was sworn in as the new New Zealand Prime Minister yesterday (27). In order to justify his decision, he has said that the New Zealand government will lose a lot of tax revenue through the smoking ban and he took this decision to prevent it.

Meanwhile, there is a possibility of creating a black market for cigarettes in New Zealand due to the ban on cigarettes.

However, regarding this decision, anti-smoking activists have said that this is a big victory for tobacco companies.

Health authorities point out that the majority of preventable deaths in New Zealand are caused by smoking. According to them, if the relevant ban was implemented, it is possible to protect about five thousand lives in a year.
