Expressway Workers are on Strike – Tickets are Free

The three armed forces and the police have been deployed to issue tickets due to the fact that the employees of the highways have left their duties today (22) and entered into a professional action.

A group of around 11,000 employees working on highways attached to the Road Development Authority are joining this strike based on several demands.

People using the highways today will not be issued a regular ticket and will receive a ticket as shown in the photo.

However, a detailed record of all vehicles entering and exiting the expressway entrances will also be prepared.

This is based on our three main demands. As our main demand, our highway network is currently under the care of the Road Development Authority. On 23.06.2023, a cabinet paper had proposed to set up a company under the Ministry of Finance and take over this highway network under that company. Also, the proposal mentions about the opportunity to run the highways as a business under public-private partnership, and for that purpose investors are allowed to be sought. With this, we fear for our job security.” Mr. Yohan Hasitha Munasinghe, Chairman of the Expressway Employees Union, said.
