President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policy has pointed out in a cabinet note that the government’s income is currently much lower than the monthly expenditure for the month of January 2023.
The President has also indicated that at the moment it is difficult for the treasury to bear all other expenses except for government employee salaries, pensions, welfare, medicines and debt payments.
Therefore, President Ranil Wickramasinghe also mentions that until the income planned to be generated by the tax amendments that are already in place is received, government expenditure will have to be further cut or postponed.
The President has further mentioned that priority criteria will be prepared by the Treasury and the release of money allocated for minor expenses will be restricted until then.
The President has emphasized that obtaining goods and services on the basis of credit for government institutions should be avoided, and any official who violates it should be personally responsible for those expenses.
