China claims they do not seek any political benefits for Chinese investment projects or financial aid given to Sri Lanka.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mr. Zhao Lijian said this in a press conference held yesterday (28), while responding to a recent comment by Foreign Minister Ali Sabri.
Mr. Ali Sabri has said that China has never forced a loan on Sri Lanka. China has provided various financial and humanitarian support to Sri Lanka. The minister has pointed out that the “debt trap” is only a fiction of Western countries, and China has been a close friend of Sri Lanka since the beginning.
Mr. Zhao Lijian said that China appreciates Mr. Ali Sabri’s statement. He also emphasized that China has supported Sri Lanka without any political conditions. China continues to support Sri Lanka’s economic and social development. Mr. Zhao Lijian said that China desires to strengthen the strategic relationship and the welfare of the people of the two countries.
