An operation to find the ship’s VDR – the company agrees to pay the loss

A search operation has been launched to find the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) on board the MV Express Pearl.

Authorities said they used the VDR to determine the ship’s captain’s conversations with others before and after the ship’s fire.

A criminal investigation into the fire is currently underway and the ship’s captain and crew have been prevented from leaving Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Ports Master Captain Nirmal Silva said that Sri Lanka has been informed about the dangerous cargo on board.

The company that owns the ship has agreed to calculate and pay the current loss from the Express Pearl.

Ajith Seneviratne, Director General of the Merchant Shipping Secretariat, said this at a media briefing held at the Government News Department today to discuss about the shipwreck and future course of action.

“The owners of the ship have agreed to pay compensation for the damage. We have discussed with the insurance companies,” he added, commenting there.
