    A slight reduction in rains can be expected

    The Department of Meteorology states that a slight reduction in the amount of heavy rains is expected from today.

    The low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has now developed into a depression and is located about 250 km north of Point Pedro (approximately 11.7 degrees north latitude and 81.6 degrees east longitude).

    It is expected to head northwest and reach the northern Tamil Nadu coast this evening.

    Showers may occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North Western and Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts. Showers can be expected in the North Central Province.

    Thundershowers during the evening or night in a few places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts can be expected.

    In some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western Provinces, there may be more than 50 mm of heavy rain.

    Winds will be strong at times across the island. The Meteorological Department said that strong winds will develop at around 40-50 kmph.
