04 Delta Mutations found in SL

Nilika Malavige, Professor of Microbiology, Director, Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Director, Dengue Research, said that four mutant variants of the delta strain of the corona virus have been identified in Sri Lanka.

She points out that such mutations have been found in the country in the past as well as in the previous Alpha variant and the earliest Covid variant and there is no need to worry as it is a normal situation.

She added that the virus develops over time and that many of these mutations do not count as mutations.

However, she said that research is being carried out to determine whether these mutations have led to the rapid growth of Covid in Sri Lanka.

She stated this at a special program on the corona epidemic in Sri Lanka held this morning through all media.

She added that all painkillers currently used in the country respond effectively to these mutations.
