The Navy has received information that a cargo ship sailing from the Port of Colombo to Singapore had caught fire in the sea area 480 nautical miles from the Kirinda Maha Rawana lighthouse.
M. S. C. Messina is said to be sailing under the Liberian flag.
Navy Media Spokesman Capt. Indika de Silva stated that information has been received that the fire had started in the engine room of the ship.
A Navy spokesman said that the ship had requested the ships passing by to assist in extinguishing the fire.
The fire was reported last night (24).
