Heavy rains in many districts

The Meteorological Department says that the southwest monsoon weather is gradually establishing across the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts today as well. In the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in some places in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara Districts, there may be around 100 mm of heavy rain.

In the Northern Province and in the Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts, several rounds of showers can be expected.

Showers at times csn be expected in the western slopes of the central hills, in the northern, north-central and north-western provinces and in the Hambantota district. Strong winds of 40-50 kmph are possible in these areas.

Meteorologists are urging the public to take necessary measures to reduce the risk of temporary strong winds and thunderstorms with thunder showers.

Meanwhile, strong winds (60-70 kmph) will develop at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Galle and Hambantota. Meteorologists also warn that the sea level could rise (about 2.0 – 2.5 m) in these areas.

Therefore, the Fisheries and Naval Community is requested to pay attention to the forthcoming announcements issued by the Meteorological Department in this regard.

Showers or thundershowers at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places during the evening or night in other sea areas.

Winds will be coming from Southwest direction in the sea areas around the island. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph.

Winds will be strong (50-55 kmph) at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Galle and Hambantota will be rough at times. Offshore winds from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee will be strong at times.

Strong winds could develop in those areas when Thundershowers are developing in those sea areas. Then those sea areas can be very rough temporarily.
