Letter from Malwathu-Asgiriya Mahanayake Theras to the President

The Chief Incumbents of Malwatta and Asgiriya have submitted a letter to President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa on the importance of convening an all-party conference of local and foreign scholars to formulate a plan for sustainable development and 13 other issues.

The letter was signed by the Chief Prelate of the Malwathu Chapter Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thero and the Most Ven. Warakagoda Gnanaratana Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter.

In the letter, the chief incumbents point out the need to formulate a national policy to provide relief to the people affected by the economic crisis.

Among the proposals are the implementation of development projects, the reduction of the cost of living and the creation of a local economic model, according to a list of priorities identified to alleviate the foreign exchange crisis.

The Mahanayake Theras also stressed the importance of providing relief to the production of essential food items, agriculture and the farming community, and enforcing the law against fraudulent traders who artificially create a shortage of essential commodities for ill-gotten financial gain in the face of the economic crisis.

The paper proposes to encourage investment, increase foreign remittances through a transparent economic plan, and the need to build an export economy.

He also emphasized the importance of encouraging new investment in the country, restructuring public debt, providing relief to low income earners, and formulating a sustainable plan to prevent waste, corruption and misuse of resources.

The Chief Prelates also commended President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa for his visionary work for the security and sovereignty of the country.

He emphasized the need for the full contribution and commitment of all members of Parliament to build the country economically in the face of disasters, regardless of party affiliation.
