Mt. Lavinia Police have arrested a criminal near the Ratmalana Airport for breaking into several Sanasa banks & rural banks in Baddegama and Elpitiya and stealing money and jewelery from Colombo.
The suspect, aged around 35, is a resident of the Meewaduma, Baddegama.
The Police Headquarters stated that the suspect was taken into police custody on 15th when he was staying near the airport in a suspicious manner and information regarding the bank robberies has been revealed during the interrogation.
The Police Headquarters stated that the information on robberies; the Thalawa Sanasa Bank in Baddegama was broken into on September 25, 2021 and nearly Rs. 1 million was stolen, the Garadewala Rural Bank in Thelikada was broken into on October 28, 2021 and gold jewelery worth Rs. 900,000 was stolen, breaking into Pitigala Mattaka Samurdhi Bank and stealing Rs. 30,000, attempting to break into Elpitiya Athkandura Sanasa Bank has been revealed during the interrogation of the suspect.
Police say that this person had broken into the banks while the banks were closed on public holidays and had committed all these thefts. The suspect was produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court and remanded till the 28th of this month.
