In the wake of the Covid 19 epidemic, the use of hand sanitizer, which was allowed to be used for the protection of inmates, has been banned in prisons due to the increase in the use of hand sanitizer as alcohol.
Prison media spokesman Chandana Ekanayake stated that steps will be taken to provide soap to the inmates instead.
It is said that the use of hand sanitizers in the prison has been banned because two Iranian nationals who were arrested while transporting narcotics from Pakistan to Sri Lanka in a vessel died and 10 were hospitalized after consuming too much sanitizer as alcohol.
Mr. Chandana Ekanayake further stated that the use of hand sanitizers is permitted only under the supervision of prison officials for the most urgent reasons.
