PM and Teachers’ unions held discussions for 3 hours – Here’s the final outcome

The discussion held between the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the representatives of the teachers’ unions this afternoon ended without a solution, according to the teachers’ principals’ unions.

According to the recommendations of the Ministerial Subcommittee appointed to increase the salaries of teachers, the teachers’ unions have rejected the proposal of the Prime Minister to divide the teachers’ salaries into three parts, one of which will be paid in next January and the other two in January 2023.

He also said that the Teachers’ and Principals’ Associations had requested the Prime Minister to pay the salary increase at once as per the proposal of the Ministerial Sub-Committee.

However, the Prime Minister has said that the increase will be paid in two stages, next January and January 2023.

The Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union said that the discussions which lasted for more than three hours ended without an agreement.

However, Stalin said that a final decision on the Prime Minister’s proposal would be taken in Colombo tomorrow (13) morning after discussions between the teachers ‘and principals’ unions.
