Police Constable Among Three Arrested for Triple Murder in Middeniya
Middeniya police have arrested three suspects, including a police constable, in connection with the fatal shooting of Anura Vidanagamage (known as “Kajja”), his daughter, and his son at the Kadewatta Junction in the Middeniya police division.
Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala made the announcement during a special statement in Parliament this morning (21).
The victims were shot and killed on the night of the 19th while traveling together. At the time of his murder, Anura idanagamage was facing multiple court cases, and he had previously claimed in a widely circulated YouTube interview that there was a political hand behind his legal troubles.
Beyond the Mask: The NPP Betrayal of Its Own Promises
The National People’s Power (NPP) is one of the strongest governments the country has ever witnessed. With 159 seats in Parliament, it secured a decisive two-thirds majority, making it the dominant political force.
However, that victory is now old news. The public is eagerly waiting to see whether the NPP will fulfill the promises that led to its landslide win.
It is evident that the NPP government has lost a significant portion of its support and is currently experiencing a decline in popularity. In politics, it is natural for any government to face diminishing public approval over time. However, the NPP is still relatively new, having been in power for only a few months. Yet, it has already shown worrying signs—making unwise decisions and failing to deliver on its commitments.
In the years leading up to its victory, the NPP pledged to create a corruption-free country and take swift action against fraud. Some of its members even claimed they would not hesitate to hold their own accountable if they were found to be corrupt or had misled voters.
With this promise, the NPP assured the public that it would introduce a new political culture. It urged citizens to vote for them, vowing to field candidates with strong educational backgrounds and unblemished records. Simultaneously, the NPP criticized other political parties and politicians for their involvement in corruption and for misleading the public. This campaign created a national discourse about the need to clean up Parliament and elect well-educated individuals. The movement was reminiscent of the 2020 ‘Viyath Maga’ campaign, which ultimately failed disastrously.
Amid these pledges and political rhetoric, the NPP won the 2024 General Election, giving millions of people hope for a fresh start. However, that hope was short-lived. The newly elected Speaker of Parliament, Ashoka Ranwala, quickly became a symbol of the hypocrisy that lay beneath the NPP’s promises.
Upon his election as Speaker, Ranwala claimed to hold a PhD and assured the public that his academic background would bring a new culture to Parliament. However, the opposition soon questioned the authenticity of his qualifications and demanded proof of his doctoral degree. Initially, the NPP and its supporters defended him, asserting that he had completed his PhD in Japan and would provide the necessary documentation.
Yet, days passed, and Ranwala eventually resigned as Speaker without offering any justifiable explanation or presenting his academic credentials. Months later, he has still not provided any clarification or evidence of his claimed qualifications.
In Sri Lanka’s democratic system, educational qualifications are not a requirement to become a Member of Parliament or even the Speaker. However, the irony lies in the NPP’s own promises. Their pledge to change the political culture has backfired far sooner than expected.
As someone who believes in democratic governance, I acknowledge Ranwala’s right to be elected as a Member of Parliament and even as Speaker. However, the NPP’s promises now raise a critical question: Were their pledges just another set of empty political slogans? If so, they have failed the public and are on the path to becoming yet another government perpetuating the ‘seven-decade curse’ they vowed to end.
I would like to ask the NPP: Where is the promise that they would take action against their own members if they were found to be frauds? Or does their supposed commitment to integrity not apply when it involves one of their own?
Furthermore, what action has the NPP taken against Ranwala for misrepresenting his credentials? Is it too much to ask the party to hold him accountable or at least push him to provide an explanation?
The NPP’s first major test has been a complete failure. They have either chosen to turn a blind eye or assume that the public, burdened by economic hardships, will eventually forget.
Either way, the NPP is losing its popularity faster than any government before it, proving that they are far better at making promises than keeping them.

Highlighting Lakvijaya’s critical role in supplying 40% of the country’s daily electricity needs, Minister Jayakody stressed the importance of maintaining the plant at the highest operational standards. Principal Arrested for Leaking Exam Paper
A principal serving in an acting capacity has been arrested by officers of the Anuradhapura District Criminal Investigation Division for allegedly leaking the Sinhala Language and Literature question paper of the 2024 Third Term Examination for Grade 11 in the Northern Central Province before the exam was conducted.
The suspect, identified as M.M.K. Rajapaksha (52), the acting principal of Athdathpala Rahula Vidyalaya and a resident of Thammannakulama, Anuradhapura, was presented before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court yesterday (29). Following the hearing, he was remanded until the 31st.
The leaked question paper was reportedly circulated via WhatsApp and discussed in tuition classes before the exam. Due to this, the Northern Central Provincial Education Authorities decided to cancel the examination. A formal complaint was then lodged with the police, leading to an investigation and the subsequent arrest of the suspect.
Gotha Asanka’s Drug Trafficker Caught with Rs.70 Million Worth of Heroin
A key associate of Gotha Asanka, a powerful overseas drug lord involved in organized crime, has been arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division in a special operation. The suspect was found in possession of 2 kilograms and 218 grams of heroin, valued at approximately Rs. 70 million.
Part of this heroin stash was discovered hidden in a house in Gothatuwa. In addition to the heroin, the suspect was found with Rs. 667,000 in cash suspected to be earnings from drug trafficking, two mobile phones, and a car believed to have been used for drug distribution. Furthermore, authorities recovered 12 motorcycles linked to the suspect, which are now under investigation to determine whether they were used for drug distribution or other criminal activities. Colombo Crimes Division Director, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Indika Lokuhettiy stated that investigations are ongoing.
The arrested suspect, a 41-year-old man, had mobile phones in his possession that, upon examination, revealed connections to Gotha Asanka, who is operating the drug trade from abroad. Gotha Asanka was previously arrested in India for drug trafficking and was detained for a long period in a prison in Tamil Nadu. However, phone records from the arrested suspect show that Gotha Asanka had been using a phone number registered in Romania. This has raised suspicions about whether he has escaped to Romania after being released from Indian custody or is still in India using a Romanian phone number. Police have launched an investigation into this matter.
The suspect’s house in Gothatuwa was searched based on intelligence regarding a planned assassination. Information indicated that a motorcycle at the residence was intended for use in the murder plot. During the raid, over 100 grams of heroin were initially found in the suspect’s possession. Further questioning led officers to discover over 2 kilograms of heroin hidden in the house.
Gotha Asanka is also suspected of being involved in contract killings, using former LTTE snipers for assassinations. Police are now investigating whether he continues to orchestrate contract killings from abroad. Investigations into all these matters are currently underway.

President Announces End of Duty-Free Vehicle Permits
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced that duty-free permits will no longer be issued for vehicle imports.
Speaking on the matter, the President revealed that approximately 20,000 applications for duty-free vehicle imports had been submitted. However, he clarified that this privilege will not be granted moving forward.
He further explained that vehicle prices are expected to rise once imports resume next month.
The President highlighted that vehicle imports were halted for five years, during which the country spent nearly $2 billion on vehicles in 2018 and $1.4 billion in 2019. He also noted the impact of currency fluctuations, stating that when the exchange rate was around Rs. 190 to the US dollar, vehicle prices were lower. With the dollar now nearing Rs. 300, he warned that imported vehicle prices could increase by approximately 40%.
President Dissanayake disclosed that discussions have been held with the Central Bank to determine the allocation of dollars for vehicle imports. He cautioned that if all pending vehicle import applications are processed in February, when the market reopens, it could exert significant pressure on the country’s dollar reserves.
As a result, he emphasized in a television interview that vehicle prices are likely to rise initially due to these factors.

Government to Float Tender for 500,000 Machine-Readable Passports Amid Rising Demand
A tender for the procurement of 500,000 machine-readable passports (MRPs) is expected to be issued in the coming days, according to authoritative sources. A committee is currently preparing the necessary documentation, The Sunday Times reported.
The daily issuance of passports has been increased to between 2,500 and 2,700, up from the previous cap of 1,500 to 1,800. This includes passports issued through one-day and regular services, as well as those processed at overseas missions and the Department of Immigration and Emigration’s (DIE) four branches.
The adjustment in the quota was made on the instructions of the Public Security Ministry to extend the use of the current limited passport stock. *The Sunday Times* reported last week that a surge in applications is expected, particularly from individuals seeking to take the Korean language proficiency test, who need a passport number to qualify.
Foreign employment agencies have urged the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) to ensure a continuous supply of passports for their clients, warning that persistent delays may prompt receiving countries to seek workers from other markets. In response, the SLBFE sent a letter to the Public Security Ministry requesting that around 200 passports be issued daily for prospective labor migrants. This demand is currently being met, according to SLBFE Chairman Koshala Wickremesinghe.
A tender for the 500,000 MRPs is expected to be announced next week, with a separate tender planned for personalizing the passports. Depending on the outcome, Sri Lanka may issue a new series of passports, following the previous shift from the “N” series to the “P” series.
The DIE is currently working through its existing stock of passports, but at the current issuance rate, this batch is expected to run out between July and September. A backlog of applications remains unresolved.
Meanwhile, the results of the previous tender for ePassports, awarded to Thales DIS Finland OY and its Sri Lankan partner, Just In Time (JIT) Technologies (Pvt) Ltd, are still being contested in the Appeal Court by losing bidder Epic Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.
In the interim, the DIE is using an emergency stock of 750,000 MRPs purchased from Thales to address the ongoing shortage of travel documents caused by issues with the mismanaged ePassport tender. These passports are being delivered in batches.
Government Shelves Impeachment of Court of Appeal President Ahead of Retirement
The government has decided to shelve its plans to impeach Court of Appeal (CA) President Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne following his submission of retirement papers to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake this week, *The Sunday Times* reported.
Justice Karunaratne is set to step down from his duties in the Court of Appeal effective February 1, and he will officially retire on June 16 upon reaching the retirement age of 63. The government sources cited by the newspaper revealed that the impeachment plans were abandoned in light of his decision to retire and withdraw from active duties.
Justice Karunaratne has informed all CA judges of his intention to step down starting February 1. Consequently, the government is now focusing on appointing a senior CA judge to serve as acting President of the Court of Appeal until his official retirement.
According to *The Sunday Times*, Justice Mohammed Laffar is the most senior judge in the Court of Appeal after Justice Karunaratne. However, President Dissanayake did not recommend Justice Laffar for a Supreme Court appointment, and he is also set to retire on June 18 upon reaching 63. The next senior judges in the Court of Appeal include Justices Udaya Karaliyadde, Rathnapriya Gurusinghe, and Dhammika Ganepola.
The government has also emphasized that the Constitutional Council (CC) holds the authority to independently investigate the conduct of any individual whose appointment requires the CC’s approval.
Meanwhile, a ceremonial sitting to welcome four newly appointed Supreme Court judges—Justices Sobhitha Rajakaruna, Menaka Wijesundera, Sampath Abayakoon, and Sampath Wijeratne—will be held on Wednesday in the Superior Court Complex’s main hall. Similarly, a ceremonial sitting for newly appointed Court of Appeal Justices Sarath Dissanayake and Pradeep Hettiarachchi will take place on Tuesday in the Court of Appeal’s main hall.
*The Sunday Times* also reported discontent within the Attorney General’s (AG) Department over the government’s decision to disregard the AG’s nomination for a recent Supreme Court vacancy. Although Additional Solicitor General Susantha Balapatabendi, PC, was nominated, his name was not forwarded by the President to the Constitutional Council for consideration.
In the High Court, Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilanchelian, the most senior judge eligible for a Court of Appeal appointment, is set to retire today (January 19) upon reaching 60. Other senior High Court judges next in line include Kandy High Court Judge Sumudu Premachandra, Colombo High Court Judges Namal Bandara Balalle and K. Priyantha Fernando, and Trincomalee High Court Judge K. Prema Shankar. The AG’s Department has also submitted the names of Senior Deputy Solicitor General Lakmali Karunanayake and Senior Deputy Solicitor General Sudarshana de Silva to the President for consideration as Court of Appeal judges.
Several additional retirements are expected in the superior courts this year. Chief Justice Murdu Fernando will retire in July, while Supreme Court Justice Gamini Amarasekara will step down in June. In the Court of Appeal, President Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and Justice Mohammed Laffar will both retire in June, with Justice Ahsan Marikar scheduled to retire in April.

During the hearing, the Magistrate instructed the CID to apprehend and present individuals who had actually organized Mahaveer Day commemorations in Sri Lanka, rather than focusing on those who merely shared videos online.
The Magistrate highlighted that the accusations against Perera did not fall under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and lacked evidence under Section 120 of the Penal Code. He criticized the CID, stating, “Do not harm the messenger in cases where substantial evidence is absent.”
The Magistrate emphasized that simply sharing videos on social media does not ethically justify treating individuals as suspects and called for adherence to minimum ethical standards when making arrests. He further provided an example where legal action was taken against a perpetrator in a past incident of child abuse, but not against those who shared the video of the incident.
Concluding the session, the Magistrate reiterated that individuals responsible for organizing Mahaveer Day events, rather than those who posted related videos, should be held accountable and presented in court.
Hambantota Port Rejuvenates Container Operations with $41 Million Crane Upgrade
The Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) announced a significant investment of US dollars 41 million in state-of-the-art crane technology, set to be fully operational by January 2025. This enhancement includes the installation of four Quay Cranes (QC) and thirteen rubber-tyred gantry Cranes (RTGs) at the Hambantota International Port (HIP), expanding the port’s capabilities to a handling capacity of 1 million TEUs.
The four Quay Cranes which arrived on the mv. De Qiang 66 on 30th November feature a Twinlift 65m outreach, with impressive load ratings of 50 tons for single handling, 65 tons for tandem lifting, and 75 tons on the underhook beam. They provide a lifting height of 42m above rail and 20m below rail. The RTGs which arrived on the same date on vessel FENG HAI DA, have a span of 23.47m and a base distance of 6.9m, each offering a single handling capacity of 41 tons and a lifting height of 01-over-05. The modern QC and RTG cranes built to meet green port initiatives have advanced automation systems and anti-collision technology, ensuring high efficiency and safety during operations.
The new equipment are a significant addition to the two QCs and three RTGs, four Reach Stackers, and three Empty Stackers HIP currently operate. The new cranes are expected to take approximately two months for commissioning.
“Our investment in these new cranes will considerably enhance HIP’s container handling capabilities, positioning us as a fully-fledged multipurpose port for Sri Lanka,” says Wilson Qu, CEO of HIPG. “This capacity building is crucial for our transshipment operations and will attract potential investors looking to establish manufacturing plants in our industrial zone. We already have several inquiries in regard to the setting up of manufacturing plants in the port’s industrial zone. In addition to that, our marketing team is committed to promoting these developments globally to engage the right partners for our initiatives.” The CEO added that the establishment of feeder services between Hambantota and Colombo expected soon, will enhance the coastal shipping network. The addition of HIP’s capacity to the nation’s overall capacity will improve cargo movement efficiency, bringing Sri Lanka closer to its goal of handling 10 million TEUs between 2025 – 2026.
The upgraded facilities will not only bolster operations within the port’s industrial zone but will also stimulate industry growth in the southern hinterland, creating new opportunities for local entrepreneurs. The Hambantota International Port Group remains committed to its goal of making significant contributions towards uplifting Sri Lanka’s economy and maritime objectives through its initiatives.
