In a firm declaration against privatization fears, Minister of Power, Engineer Kumara Jayakody, assured that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and its institutions will remain under full government ownership.
“We have opposed the sale of these institutions long before coming to power, and our stance remains unchanged,” the Minister stated while addressing officers and employees at the Lakvijaya Power Plant yesterday. “Our commitment is to protect government dominance in the energy and financial sectors. Restructuring does not mean privatization—generation, transmission, and distribution will remain 100% state-owned.”
He emphasized that no part of these institutions would be handed over to private entities and reassured employees that their job security is guaranteed.
Highlighting Lakvijaya’s critical role in supplying 40% of the country’s daily electricity needs, Minister Jayakody stressed the importance of maintaining the plant at the highest operational standards. He commended the senior management and workforce for their dedication to ensuring stable electricity generation.
Accompanying the Minister on the inspection tour were Additional General Manager (Gen.) Nalaka Wijekoon, Power Station Manager G.W. Bamunusinghe, and other senior officials.
