Many plantation workers leave the job

The All Ceylon Plantation Workers Union says that more than 50,000 plantation workers have left their jobs since 2021.

Chairman Kittan Selvaraj mentions that 133,000 plantation workers have been employed in 2021.

But by now, that number has reduced to 86,000, and many of them have migrated to Colombo for work.

He said that, at present, 198 tea factories have been closed.

The chairman says that his association will continue to protest, asking for a daily wage of 2000 rupees, and in view of the current cost of living, the plantation workers definitely need a daily wage of 2000 rupees.
