Recognition of Medical Degrees from International Universities in Sri Lanka

In a recent Cabinet meeting, a significant proposal was approved to establish legal frameworks enabling the recognition of medical degrees obtained from international universities in Sri Lanka. The proposal, jointly presented by President Ranil Wickramasinghe and Health Minister Keheliya Raukwella, outlines specific criteria for recognizing these degrees.

According to the approved plan, medical degrees from universities ranked within the top thousand medical schools globally, as per international rankings, will be accepted. To facilitate this, a committee headed by the Chief Secretary will be appointed. This committee will be tasked with developing a national policy that includes relevant standards and criteria. The committee will also provide recommendations for amending the provisions of the Medical Ordinance to align with the current requirements and international standards.

This initiative signifies a significant step forward in ensuring that medical education received from reputable international institutions is recognized within the Sri Lankan context. The move aims to enhance opportunities for aspiring medical professionals and align the country’s medical education standards with global benchmarks. Stay tuned for further developments on this crucial matter.
