During the current year, a total of 16 earthquakes have occurred near the sea border of Sri Lanka. According to Ms. Nilmini Thaldena, the senior seismologist in charge of the Earthquake Monitoring Center, approximately 6 of these earthquakes took place in the Buttala area, with 3 of them being noticeable to the local population.
Ms. Thaldena explained that these earthquakes typically occur near the geological zones around Sri Lanka and emphasized that they are not harmful. Therefore, there should be no undue fear regarding these occurrences.
She also highlighted that all four earthquake monitoring centers established in the country are equipped with high technology. While the country already possesses sufficient technology for ground motion calculations, she noted the need for additional equipment to enhance accuracy.
