A message from the Governor of the Central Bank to Sri Lankans living abroad

The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Nandalal Weerasinghe has issued a message to Sri Lankans living abroad.

It provides them with an opportunity to assist in alleviating the economic crisis facing the country.

Following is the message issued by the Governor of the Central Bank.

Due to several reasons including the COVID-19 pandemic, global political imbalances and the gradual erosion of fiscal position of the country, Sri Lanka is now facing social, economic and financial distress leading to disturbances to the normal lives of our people. Although the authorities are taking measures to address the current situation of the country including taking steps to actively manage its debt obligations, finding immediate financial assistance from friendly nations and progressing with the discussions with the International Monetary Fund for a comprehensive program, the positive impacts of such measures will be enjoyed by our people only in the medium to long term. However, urgent measures are needed to enhance the country’s foreign reserves position to meet day-to-day essential imports including food, fuel and medicines.

In this background, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) warmly welcomes the communications made by the Sri Lankans living abroad expressing their willingness to support the country at this crucial juncture by donating much-needed foreign exchange to the Sri Lankan’s foreign reserves. The well-wishers may make foreign exchange transfers to the following accounts maintained at respective banks by the CBSL, and the CBSL assures that such foreign currency transfers will be utilized only for the importation of essential imports including food, fuel and medicines.

In order to maintain the transparency of collection and utilization of such foreign currency resources, the CBSL has appointed a 3-member committee of the officials of the CBSL, and the said committee will publish financial statements of the foreign currency funds received by well-wishers into the said accounts on quarterly basis via cbsl.gov.lk.
