    New laws for public safety

At present, the government is focusing on enacting and amending the existing laws as the existing laws on synthetic narcotics, including ice, are not adequate for law enforcement.

Special attention was paid to this issue during a discussion held at the Ministry of Justice regarding the formulation and updating of laws in several areas identified for public safety in view of the current situation in the country.

The meeting was chaired by Ali Sabri, President’s Counsel, Minister of Justice and Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekara, Minister of Public Defense.

The meeting focused on seven main issues.

Special attention has been paid to the formulation of laws to destroy stocks of seized narcotics samples.

According to the Ministry of Defense, discussions were held to prevent further harm to the victims and to expedite the investigation of crimes against children and women.

It also focused on increasing the percentage of money added to the Police Rewards Fund in drug raids that take their lives seriously, streamlining the registration of telephone SIMs and enacting new property laws strengthening the Money Laundering Act.

Secretary to the Ministry of Justice M. M. P. K. Mayadunna, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Major General Jagath Alwis, Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratne, and Senior DIG Ajith Rohana were also present at the occasion.
