Ministry of justice to send summonses via SMS and email

The Ministry of Justice is considering legislation to enable the use of e-mail and mobile phone text messages to send summonses in court proceedings.

Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Ali Sabri, Minister of Justice, to amend Authority 101 of the Code of Civil Procedure, was approved by the Cabinet yesterday.

The statement issued by the Cabinet Office in this regard is as follows.

The Committee on Civil Law Reforms, appointed by the Minister of Justice, has recommended the need to amend the existing provisions on the issuance and handing over of summonses, and the focus is on the need to use the most commonly used forms of communication, such as email and mobile phone messages, when sending summonses to parties to a case. Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal made by the Minister of Justice to amend the Code of Civil Procedure (Chapter 101) to include amendments recommended by the said Committee.
