University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunga says that they plan to reopen the universities soon by providing both Covid vaccines to academic and non-academic staff members of the Sri Lankan university system.
He further said that an expeditious program has been implemented in collaboration with the health sector.
Vaccinations for both staffs over the age of 30 in the academic and non-academic departments of each university are already completed.
He said that all universities have been informed to take immediate action in coordination with the nearest health care centers in the respective districts for the vaccination of academic, non-academic staff and students under the age of 30 in all the universities.
Also, vaccinations have been completed for both University Grants Commission staff over the age of 30 and under.
Recruitment of students to universities for the coming year is currently underway.
The professor said that the vaccination was carried out with special permission as it was necessary to call the staff for this purpose.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) monitors the progress of the vaccination program for staff and students under the age of 30 in universities. He said the universities were expected to reopen after discussions with the health sector, university vice chancellors and other stakeholders.
Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunga emphasized that although the universities are currently closed, all relevant academic and non-academic activities are being carried out without any hindrance through the new communication technology.
The Chairman made this statement while making a statement to the Government Information Department yesterday (17) regarding the speedy opening of universities.
