    Labour Day is today – 40 May Day Rallies across the country

    World Labour Day is today (01).

    The entire world is celebrating Labour Day today (01) with a view to remembering the historical struggles and achievements made by the labour movement by promoting the rights and privileges of the working people.

    On the occasion of World Labours’ Day, 40 demonstrations and rallies will be held by political parties throughout the island, according to Police Media Spokesperson DIG Attorney Nihal Thalduwa.

    08 parades with meetings and 06 meetings only will be held in Colombo city alone.

    The President will go to 2 rallies on May Day

    President Ranil Wickramasinghe is scheduled to attend two rallies today (01 May).

    The May Day Rally organized by the Ceylon Workers’ Congress is scheduled to begin today at 10.00 am at the Kotagala Public Stadium and President Ranil Wickramasinghe is scheduled to join it first.

    The President joins for this at the invitation of the Ceylon Labour Congress. It is planned to hold the May Day Rally and Parade with the participation of a large number of the people of estates. The largest trade union and political party representing the hill community is the Ceylon Workers’ Congress.

    UNP May Rally headed by the President

    The United National Party May Day rally will start today at 2.00 pm in front of Maligawatta Police in Colombo under the chairmanship of President Ranil Wickramasinghe.

    The May Day rally will be held with the participation of a large number of party members including organizations affiliated to the United National Party.

    Pohottu May Rally at Borella

    Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s May rally will be held at Borella Campbell Park at 2 pm under the leadership of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa, and Founder Basil Rajapaksa.

    2 May Day Rallies from SJB

    Samagi Jana Balawegaya will hold two May rallies at Chatham Street, Colombo and in estates. The May Day Parade of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will start at 2pm from the AE Gunasinghe Sports Ground in Saunders Place, Colombo. The May Day Rally will be held at Chatham Street under the leadership of Opposition Leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa.

    4 nationwide May Day Rallies by NPP

    The National People’s Power has planned to hold four May rallies. It is in the cities of Colombo, Jaffna, Matara and Anuradhapura. The May Day rallies have been organized under the theme “People’s power is united for the solution of the country”.

    May Rally of SLFP in Gampaha

    The Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s May Day rally is scheduled to be held at the Gampaha Municipal Stadium. A senior member of the party said that all members of the party are expected to attend.

    The May Day Parade of the Frontline Socialist Party has been planned to start from the White Sports Field in Maligakande, Colombo, and proceed along Ananda Mawatha to Philip Gunawardena Stadium in TB Jaya Mawatha, Maradana.

    May Rally of the United Left movement, including the Communist Party of Sri Lanka and the Democratic Left Front, will be held at the Kirulapana Lalith Athalamudali Stadium.

    The May Rally of Lanka Sama Samaja Party will be held at Ananda Samarakoon Open Air Theatre, Nugegoda at 2 pm.

    Today marks the 31st anniversary of the death of Ranasinghe Premadasa, who served as the second executive president of Sri Lanka. He was killed in a bomb attack. To honor his memory, a floral tribute has been organized near the court complex at his statue.

    The Police Media Spokesperson said that 6000 police officers and more than 350 police special task force officers will be deployed for Colombo city and if necessary and only if a special situation arises, they expect to use the support of the army.

    The Police Media Spokesman also emphasized that the deployment of police and police special task force officers is for the convenience of the public coming to Colombo and for the safety of May Day parades and meetings as well as celebrations.

    The Police Media Spokesman stated that in addition to Colombo city, nearly 3000 police officers will be deployed across the island and the army will be kept on the waiting list to be called up if necessary.
