Cement smuggling at black market prices

    0

A racket is being carried out across the country to sell cement at black market prices, creating a fake cement shortage.

The average price of a 50 kg bag of cement is around Rs. 1375, but the black market sells it for between Rs. 1800 and Rs. 2000.

Although there is a shortage of cement these days, it was confirmed during an investigation that buyers can still buy any cement stock at the black market price.

Some traders engage in this scam by not stockpiling cement in their warehouses but keeping them in lorries.

So they keep cement in the lorries and sell them so that the Consumer Affairs Authority or some other department can come and inspect their warehouses and say there is no cement.

We have seen smugglers evading the law by claiming that the lorries are ready to transport the ordered cement.

    Sri Lanka regrets HRW report

    0

The Foreign Ministry has noted with regret that the Sri Lanka section of the HRW “World Report 2022” depicts an exaggerated and unduly negative picture of the current human rights situation in the country.

Sri Lanka follows a policy of constructive engagement with the international community including with international NGO’s such as HRW on matters related to human rights, and we recognize their constructive role as human rights defenders. However, sensationalized and biased reporting during a particularly challenging global economic and social environment risks igniting and aggravating domestic discord. We highlight the importance of responsible, balanced and impartial reporting.

At the Human Rights Council in Geneva in September last year, Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris stated that Sri Lanka is engaged in pursuing sustainable peace, through an inclusive, domestically designed and executed reconciliation and accountability process. Sri Lanka also reiterated its long-standing commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights in line with our own constitution and our international obligations.

This message was reiterated recently by the President at the opening of the 9th Session of the Parliament of Sri Lanka on 18 January 2022.

Accordingly, Airbus has decided to cancel the agreement to supply 50 A321 Neo aircraft to Qatar Airways.

The deal, which was canceled by Airbus, is valued at more than $ 6 billion and has been the subject of a long-running dispute between the two companies.

Qatar Airways has also alleged that a copper net designed to protect the aircraft from lightning was exposed after the paint on the hulls of the aircraft was fallen.

The airline further said that the paint spill has posed a serious threat to the aircraft and the lives of its passengers.

Qatar Airways has also demanded $ 600 million in compensation from Airbus for failing to use 21 aircraft.

Airbus has stated in court regarding the allegations made by Qatar Airways that there was no basis for Qatar Airways not to use their aircraft.

Meanwhile, Airbus has accused Qatar Airways of minimizing its losses in the wake of the financial crisis caused by the Corona epidemic.
However, according to an investigative report published by the Reuters news agency, five other airlines have also reported leaks of paint on the A350S model aircraft since 2016.

Meanwhile, Qatar Airways yesterday released a video of the plane that lost its paint on social media.
