Provincial police chiefs are empowered to strictly enforce the election law

A special meeting was held between the Senior Deputy Inspector Generals of Police and the Election Commission yesterday.

At this time when there is no Inspector General of Police or Acting Inspector General of Police, the Provincial Police Chiefs have received instructions from the Election Commission to use their powers to strictly implement the laws related to the election.

It has been mentioned informing the Provincial Police Chiefs that according to the election law, no candidate should be allowed to display poster cutout banners after accepting the nominations related to the presidential election, and if anyone commits any violent incident under the election law, the Election Commission, Provincial Police, and the Code of Criminal Procedure should deal with those who do so.

In this regard, in an inquiry made to the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Asanka Karavita, in charge of the Police Elections Division, it was mentioned that the necessary activities to deal with the elections in the police through the Provincial Police Chiefs are already underway.

He added that workers will be deployed after the fifteenth to remove the illegal poster cutouts in the presidential election as well as in the previous elections.
