    Election Commission sent a letter to IGP reminding the limits of Police

    The Elections Commission has sent a letter to the IGP stating that the police are not capable of obstructing or abusing the law of a political party that is acting peacefully and democratically.

    Responding to a complaint sent to the Election Commission by the Frontline Socialist Party the commission has sent the letter to IGP CD Wickramaratne.

    A complaint was lodged with the Elections Commission recently alleging that activists of the Frontline Socialist Party were being arrested and that the police were frequently obstructing the party’s political activities.

    In response to the complaint, an Election Commission has sent a letter to the IGP stating that the Constitution allows a political party to conduct political activities peacefully and democratically.

    The letter sent to the IGP by the Elections Commission states that there is no obstacle for a political party to criticize the government.

    After 8 years Sri Lankan Cricket team beats South Africans in an ODI tournament

    Sri Lanka won the three-match ODI series against South Africa today.

    It is eight years since Sri Lanka won an ODI series against South Africa. Also, Sri Lanka won the cricket ODI tournament after about a year and a half since last series win.

    Sri Lanka won the third ODI by 78 runs.
    They won the toss and elected to bat first and scored 203 runs for the loss of 09 wickets at the end of 50 overs.

    Charith Asalanka scored 47 valuable runs in the first inning of the match.

    In reply, South Africa was bowled out for 125 in 29 overs.

    ODI debutant Mahesh Theekshana took a wicket off his debut ball in his debut cricket match. He took 04 wickets for 37 runs in his 10 overs.

    Earlier, three Sri Lankan players, Charith Buddhika, Kaushalya Lokuarachchi and Thilan Thushara, had shown such prowess. They played against Zimbabwe in 2001, Kenya in 2002 and the West Indies in 2007.

    Dushmantha Chameera won the man of the match award today, taking 02 wickets for 16 runs in 04 overs. He also scored 29 runs off 39 balls.

    The man of the match award went to Charith Asalaka.

    Home treatments began for Covid infected children with no symptoms

    Dr. Deepal Perera, a pediatrician at the Ridgeway Children’s Hospital in Colombo, said that a program has been launched to treat children infected with Kovid at home if they do not have severe symptoms.

    If there is no severe fever, the children should be treated at home and given as much liquid food as possible and they need rest, said Dr. Deepal Perera.

    Specialist Dr. Deepal Perera said that it is very important for a child with Covid infection to be hospitalized if he develops a high fever while receiving treatment at home after giving the appropriate dose of paracetamol.

    Almost 30 MN vaccines are given to the citizens of Sri Lanka

    The first dose has been given to 12,823,147 people in Sri Lanka under the Covid vaccination program.

    The Epidemiology Unit states that the second dose was given to 9,414,851 people by 10.00 am today.

    The vaccines used are AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, Sputnik-v, Pfizer and Moderna.

    School teachers, principals to get increased salary benefits

    Principal and teachers to receive richer pay packets with their September salaries this month.

    Minister Ramesh Pathirana says that he expects that the teachers and principals will return to work accepting the solution given by the government for their salary issue.

    Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Pathirana mentioned this at the media briefing held today (07) to announce cabinet decisions.

    He noted that the teachers and principals would receive the proposed interim allowance with the September salary.

    “The government’s solution to the teacher-principal salary issue was announced at the meeting, which clearly stated the salary increments that the government could provide under the current economic and financial situation. It was known that there will be an increase in the basic salary from 17% to 26% for the various levels of the teacher service and the principal service.

    Commissioner General of Essential Services is empowered to issue orders to relevant officials as per Section 5 of the Public Security Ordinance

    The emergency regulations on essential food supply formulated as per section 5 of the Public Security Ordinance were declared in a gazette, as per the powers vested in terms of section 2 and by enforcing directives under section ii of the Ordinance, in order to prevent market irregularities that inconvenience the consumers such as hoarding of essential items including paddy, rice and sugar and exorbitant prices.

    Accordingly, it is the task of the Commissioner General of Essential Services to coordinate and initiate all activities to maintain the supply of essential services as per section 5 of the Public Security Ordinance.
    Under this directive, the Commissioner General of Essential Services can appoint the required number of deputy or assistant commissioners by name or designation to implement the task.

    The Commissioner-General of Essential Services may issue orders to any competent officer appointed under section 5 to ensure that essential services are maintained, and it shall be the duty of the competent officer, authority or the coordinating officer to comply with all such orders based on the requirement.

    South Korean embassy announces finalists of K-POP festival

    The Korean Embassy is delighted to announce the 6 finalists of the 2021 K-POP World Festival in Sri Lanka. The “K-POP World Festival” is a global festival for participants who are enthusiastic about K-POP, which is co-hosted by the Korean Foreign Ministry and the Korea Broadcasting System (KBS). In this time of the covid-19 pandemic, the Preliminary Round of the K-POP World Festival in Sri Lanka took place on a virtual platform. The K-POP festival in Sri Lanka was organized by the Korean Embassy together with popular duo Bathiya and Santhush and Channa Wijewardena, a professional dancer, choreographer and member of Channa-Upuli Performing Arts Foundation. Mr. Bathiya Jayakody, Mr. Santhush Weeraman, and Mr. Channa Wijewardena thankfully served as judges in selecting the best performers who will qualify to the next round of the 2021 K-POP world festival from Sri Lanka.

    Korean Ambassador Santhush highly commended the enthusiasm shown by Sri Lankans towards K-pop and also gave his wholehearted thanks to the amazing judges for their contribution to select the K-pop finalists for 2021 from Sri Lanka. He hopes to further enhance our cultural cooperation and partnership in the future.

    The 2021 K-POP World Festival in Sri Lanka had two competition categories, best K-POP Dance Performance and K-POP Dance Performance with Inspirational Personal Story about K-POP. Participants were required to submit two videos, a performance to a K-Pop song of their choice and one performance to a BTS song.

    Under the category of best K-POP Dance Performance, Island Stompers, Lachimolala, Riya Pathirana and Mandira Hippola were selected as best performers of the preliminary round after a tough competition. The performers scored impressively under the criteria for the preliminary round which included choreography/ composition, expression and stage charisma. Under the category of the most inspirational personal story about K-POP, StarKIS and WISH emerged as best performances.

    The finalists will continue to the last round of the 2021 K-POP World Festival which will be held in Korea. The Finalists will be announced later in October. Congratulations to all the best performances, your stunning performances impressed the judges and the Embassy hopes that you can enter the final round of the 2021 K-POP World Festival.

    The expanding “Korean wave” (Hallyu) movement among Sri Lankans is contributing to nurturing and strengthening the foundation for cultural public diplomacy as well as fostering friendly Korean and Sri Lankan ties.     Permission granted to assemble Vehicles in the Country

    Co-Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana says that the necessary permission has been granted to assemble vehicles in the country.

    He stated that the relevant cabinet paper was presented by the Minister of Industries at the media briefing held today (07).

    “Vehicle imports to Sri Lanka have been suspended due to the ongoing foreign exchange crisis. We hope that our foreign exchange crisis will be resolved gradually.

    Until then the Minister of Industries presented a cabinet paper. Necessary permission has been granted to assemble vehicles in this country. The private sector will be carried out the relevant activities. “

    Govt. lend lands on a long term lease basis for setting up large scale commercial Dairy Farms

    A proposal made to provide lands on a long-term lease basis to private sector investors to set up large-scale commercial dairy farms to meet the local demand for milk, was approved by the Cabinet yesterday.

    The statement issued by the Cabinet Office in this regard is as follows.

    About 40% of Sri Lanka’s liquid milk requirement is produced locally, while for the remainder, around Rs. 50 billion is being spent annually on imports. Therefore, the Presidential Task Force on Economic Rejuvenation and Poverty Alleviation has submitted necessary proposals to the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka to encourage local and foreign investors to improve local milk production.

    The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka has invited proposals from interested investors and the proposal made by Hon. Minister of Agriculture, to proceed on a long term lease basis for a period of 30 years to develop unused lands on farms belonging to the National Livestock Development Board and other government unused lands as modern dairy farms for the investors who submitted project proposals recommended by the Technical Evaluation Committee of the Board, was approved by the Cabinet.

    These are the private investment companies.

    Allotment of 700 acres to the H.B.K.I.R. International Investment / Access Agro (Pvt) Ltd. and 60 acres to the Pesara Logistics Institute from the Nikaweratiya farm belonging to the National Livestock Development Board.

    Allotment of 811 acres to Farm’s Pride (Pvt) Ltd. from Galabodawatta Estate and Mount Jin Estate belonging to People’s Estate Development Board.

    Allotment of 200 acres of Deltota Estate owned by Janatha Estate Development Board and 150 acres of Grete Sand Estate to Hillside Agro (Pvt) Ltd.

    Allotment of 250 acres of Kottukachchiya farm belonging to the National Livestock Development Board to Gamma Pizzakraft Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.


    SL Paralympic champions are honored with massive cash prizes

    The Cabinet has approved the awarding of cash prizes proposed by the Ministry of Sports to the two athletes who participated in the Tokyo Paralympic Games and brought glory to the country.

    A statement issued by the Cabinet Secretariat states:

    “Dinesh Priyantha Herath won the gold medal with a new world record in the men’s javelin throw event in the F46 category at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, while Samitha Dulan Kodithuwakku won the bronze medal in the men’s javelin event in the F64 category. They have given remarkable achievements to the motherland. The National Sports Council established under the provisions of the Sports Act No. 25 of 1973 has recommended the criteria for awarding cash prizes and prize money for international sports competitions.
    Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal made by the Minister of Youth and Sports to award cash prizes to the two athletes who brought glory to the nation and their two coaches as recommended by the National Sports Council.”

    According to the Ministry of Sports, it has been recommended to give a prize of Rs. 50 million to Dinesh Priyantha and Rs. 20 million to Dulan Kodithuwakku. In addition, it was decided to give 25 percent of the prize money to the coaches of these players.

    Commodity tax for imported Big Onions

    A special commodity tax of Rs. 40 per kilogram of imported big onions has been imposed from today (07), Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said at a media briefing.

    He said the tax was imposed to protect farmers as the local big onion crops are coming to market.

    Significant decrease in Covid infected Children

    The number of children receiving treatments for corona at the Colombo Children’s Hospital has dropped sharply, said its director G. Wijesuriya.

    On average, about 200 children with corona were being treated daily in the past, but today only 87 children with corona are being treated at the hospital, the hospital director said.

    Six wards at the Colombo Children’s Hospital and another ward at the Rajagiriya Ayurveda Premises will be functioning under the supervision of the Children’s Hospital for corona infected children, the Director of the hospital said.

    He also said that the rapid decline in the number of children infected with corona was a good sign.

    Colombo hospital limits heart surgeries due to Covid

    Steps have been taken to restrict heart surgeries at the Colombo National Hospital due to the risk of Covid.

    Accordingly, it has been decided to perform only the essential heart surgeries, said the Director of the Colombo National Hospital, Dr. Kumara Wickramasinghe.

    The Colombo National Hospital performed about 25 heart surgeries a week and the number had dropped to five due to the current situation.

    More than 6,000 heart patients are on the waiting list at the Colombo National Hospital for heart surgeries.

    How to register online for the vaccination of 20+ people in the Western Province

    The Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) says that people over the age of 20 in the Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts of the Western Province can book a date, time and center to receive the first dose of Sinopharm vaccine via online and SMS.

    People between 20-30 in the Western Province are eligible to receive this vaccine and all 20+ people in the Gampaha and Kalutara Districts are eligible for it. The vaccination process has already begun.

    Eligible citizens can register at https://vaccine.covid19.gov.lk or via SMS. This is being implemented in collaboration with the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID 19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), the Western Provincial Ministry of Health, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) and the Mobile Service.

    To register via SMS, type the following commands and send them to 1906.

    STEP 01: Type ‘districts’ without quotes to obtain a list of district codes with active vaccination processes.

    STEP 02: Select your district code from the district code you received and type it back and send to 1906 to get the area MOH code list. Ex. – Colombo – (COL)

    STEP 03: Select the relevant area code Ex. – (COL2) and type it back and send to 1906 to obtain the registered vaccination center codes.

    STEP 04: Complete the form and send an SMS with the codes you have obtained to register for your first vaccine.

    Prisons are overcrowded -SL is being Internationally criticized

    Ali Sabri, the Minister of Justice says that the number of detainees in the country’s prison system is currently two to three times that of those with adequate facilities.

    Therefore, it has been severely criticized by the international community, he said at a discussion held yesterday to look into the progress of the project to rehabilitate the Welikada prison premises on a 200 acre land in Millewa, Horana.

    He says that at present there are only 11,000 detainees in the prison system in the country.

    Therefore, the establishment of the Welikada Prison in Borella at Millewa is a must, he said.

    Oxygen dependency dropped among Covid patients

    The number of COVID-19 patients depending on oxygen has been relatively reduced in the country, Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said as reported by Daily Mirror.

    Addressing a news briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau, he said this was due to a slight decrease in the number of COVID patients.

    “It is a great relief that the number of Oxygen-dependent patients has decreased. However, we are prepared to provide oxygen in case the number of such patients goes up,” Dr Herath underlined.

    He also emphasized the importance of getting Oxygen generated in the country rather than importing them.

    Indian High Commission rebuffs reports about the rejection of credentials to SL envoy in New Delhi

    High Commission of India has noticed that there have been several media reports regarding the ‘credentials’ of H.E Asoka Milinda Moragoda, High Commissioner-designate of Sri Lanka to India, who has arrived in New Delhi. It is clarified that there is no truth in reports about the non-acceptance of ‘credentials’ of the High Commissioner-designate of Sri Lanka to India by the Government of India.

    Quadruplets die during birth due to Corona

    A pregnant mother who was receiving treatment at the Ampara General Hospital had given birth to four twins and all four of her children had died at birth, hospital sources said.

    She is a resident of Vijithapura village in Ampara and had been receiving treatment at the Ampara General Hospital for several days for a corona infection and later recovered and returned home.

    She was later hospitalized again due to sudden illness and was referred for childbirth.

    A spokesman for the Ampara General Hospital said that two boys and two girls had given birth and all four had died during childbirth.

    He said that he suspects all of her children may have died as a result of complications from the covid infection.

    The Ampara Covid Committee stated that the bodies of the children and the mother were cremated under the supervision of the health department.

    About 100 tourists are currently being treated for Corona in SL

    About 100 foreign tourists are currently being treated in hospitals for Covid infection, according to Health Ministry sources.

    According to Ministry of Health sources, tourists from various countries who visited Sri Lanka during the outbreak of the corona epidemic have been receiving treatment for covid infection at government and private hospitals in Sri Lanka.

    Meanwhile, about 250 tourists from Ukraine and Kazakhstan were among the patients, the sources said.

    SriLankan Airlines launches flights to Paris

    SriLankan Airlines, the National Carrier of Sri Lanka, and a member of the oneworld alliance has announced the launching of flights to the French capital, Paris. 

    SriLankan’s new service will operate scheduled flights between Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and France’s Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) from 1st November 2021.

    Accordingly, SriLankan would commence thrice weekly, non-stop flights to France every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday using a fleet of Airbus A330-300 aircraft configured for 269 economy and 28 business class seats. 

    The flight time is around 11 hours and 25 minutes., and Flight UL563 is scheduled to depart Colombo at 00:35 hrs., and arrive in Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport at 07:30 hrs.  The return flight UL564 is scheduled to depart Paris on the same day at 14:30 hrs. and arrive in Colombo at 05:20 hrs. the next day.

    SriLankan Airlines Chairman, Ashok Pathirage said, “We are truly delighted to launch direct services between Colombo and Paris. The new route is indicative of our continuous commitment to enhance our network and the travel experience of passengers both in France and around the world.     Emergency Regulations were passed by Majority of 81 Votes

    Emergency regulations imposed by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to take action against the increase in prices by hiding stocks of essential food items including sugar and rice were passed by a majority of 81 votes in Parliament today (06).

    The debate on the Emergency Regulations began at 10:30 am and the vote was taken in the evening.

    Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena stated that 132 votes were cast in favor of the emergency while 51 votes were cast against it. Accordingly, the resolution was passed by a majority of 81 votes on the Emergency Regulations for the provision of essential food items.

    Media Coalition requests the government to protect Afghan journalists in Sri Lanka

    The Media Coalition calls on the government to provide protection to Sri Lankan Afghan journalists who are facing serious threats to their lives.

    The Coalition of Media Organizations has made this request in a letter to Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and External Affairs Minister Prof. GL Peiris.

    On behalf of the Association of Media Organizations, the request was made by the Federation of Media Workers’ Trade Unions, the Free Media Movement, the Sri Lanka Professional Journalists’ Association, the Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum, the Tamil Media Forum and the Sri Lanka Young Journalists’ Association.

    As a consortium of media organizations in Sri Lanka, we would like to draw your attention to the serious and dangerous situation facing our fellow Afghan journalists at this time as many of them are in grave danger in the face of the Taliban regime. The letter also requested to focus on providing protection of Sri Lanka for them.

    Owner of Guruge Gems has passed away

    Jinadasa Guruge, Head of Guruge Gems, Kahawatta International Gem Trade Company has passed away today (06).

    Mr. Jinadasa Guruge is considered as a pioneer in taking the local gem industry to the international arena.

    Guruge was 86 years old when he died at a private hospital in Colombo.

    He is a father of seven children.

    His last rites will be performed tomorrow (07).

    UNP seeks protection from Satara Waram Deviyo on its new journey

    The United National Party (UNP), in coincidence with its 75th anniversary, has embarked on a journey with the protection of four heavenly kings called ‘Satara Waram Deviyo’, its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

    He made these remarks in his address to the function to mark the event on Zoom.

    “Mahamanya D.S. Senanayake secured independence for Sri Lanka which remained under British colonial rule for 134 years. He built the UNP to ensure the forward march of the country as a Sri Lanlan nation. Today, we mark the 75th anniversary of our party with pride and dignity. We opened the path of development to Sri Lanka,” he said.

    Reiterating that the country is in the midst of the pandemic, he said 20,000-30,000 people were likely to perish according to experts’ analysis. He said so many others would lose employment because of the economic downturn.

    Parliament convened to approve Emergency Regulations

    Parliament convened today (06) at 10.00 am to approve the Emergency Regulations imposed by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to take action against the increase in prices by hiding stocks of essential food items including sugar and rice in the times of people are helpless due to the spread of Covid 19 virus.

    The Parliament will convene under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena until 4.30 pm today. The debate on the Emergency Regulations Motion is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and the vote will take place at 4:30 p.m.

    More Pfizer Vaccines will arrive today

    92,430 US-made Pfizer vaccines were airlifted this morning (06).

    According to airport sources, the consignment of vaccines purchased by Sri Lanka was flown by a Qatar Airways flight at around 1.45 am.
