The Minister made these remarks at a meeting when, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Sri Lanka Dewi Gustina Tobing called on the Foreign Minister at the Foreign Ministry, on Monday 24 January 2022. This was the first meeting with the Foreign Minister following the presentation of credentials to the President on 21 December 2021.

The Minister recalled warmly meeting his counterpart Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in 2021 and also meeting Indonesian President Joko Widodo, at the COP26 and even before his inauguration, noting the excellent warm relations between the two countries. Minister Peiris underscored that both countries shared global priorities in the international arena, dating to their membership of the Non-Alignment Movement and shared outlook on socio-economic development and international relations, including environment, climate change and sustainable development. He emphasized the importance of the development of the Indian Ocean and the Indo- Pacific region and briefed on Sri Lanka’s chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and playing a leading role as Blue Charter Champion in the Commonwealth and its work on issues such as Mangrove conservation and spearheading the campaign for Sustainable Nitrogen Management.

The Foreign Minister and the Ambassador expressed interest to further expand cooperation, in a wide range of areas such as close cooperation in the United Nations and international fora, and supporting each other’s candidatures as well as to enhance trade, investment and tourism. No power cut till January 27

    0

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), the electricity sector regulator, has decided to reconsider the proposal made by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) on 27th January 2022 on power interruption as there is no need for a power cut from today to 27th of January 2022. It is observed that there are sufficient stocks of fuel to generate electricity during these three (03) days.

Explaining further, Mr. Janaka Ratnayake, Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka says, “The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has been asked to provide information on existing stocks of fuel and the dates on which they can be delivered to power plants. Sri Lanka is expected to receive a stock of crude oil by the end of this month and after refining the fuel will be supplied to power plants which uses fossil fuels and Naphtha fuel for the generation of electricity. Also, Unit 3 of the Norochcholai power plant, which is currently undergoing renovations, is scheduled to resume for power generation before the end of this month. With that, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka is confident that there will be an uninterrupted electricity supply. In addition, we (The Commission) discussed with the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka finding ways to provide the required foreign exchange for the importation of coal and other fuels. We hope the foreign exchange issue will also be resolved in the future.”

The PUCSL has also recommended a number of short- and medium-term solutions to face the power crisis. The short-term proposals include reducing the demand for electricity through an accelerated power conservation program with the support of electricity consumers.

In addition, steps have already been taken to make effective use of state-owned and private sector-owned generators as a medium-term solution. In Sri Lanka more than 3000 MW of capacity is owned by various state and private organizations and, a methodology will be introduced to supply power efficiently from those generators. Also, the possibility of connecting such generators to the national grid in the future is being studied. The PUCSL has also recommended installing solar and wind power systems as soon as possible.

Monetary donation value for the ‘Obata Geyak – Ratata Hetak’ housing program is increased

    0

The Cabinet has decided to increase the monetary donation value for the ‘Obata Geyak – Ratata Hetak’ housing program in view of the sharp rise in prices of construction materials.

The press release issued by the Cabinet Office in this regard is as follows.

Under this project, which is implemented for low-income families living in temporary houses, a grant of up to a maximum of Rs. 600,000 will be given to a selected beneficiary family based on the progress of their housing construction.

Since the project was launched in 2020, the cost of construction materials has skyrocketed, making it difficult to build a fully-fledged residential house as expected with a grant of Rs. 600,000.

Therefore, it was decided to approve the proposal made by the Hon. Prime Minister in his capacity as the Minister of Urban Development and Housing to increase the assistance paid under this program to the selected beneficiary families from the year 2022 to Rs. 650,000.
