Reversal of law on teenage sexual relations

The government has decided to withdraw the bill that was prepared to be introduced to ease the punishment if a girl between the ages of 14 and 16 has sexual relations with a person under the age of 22 with her consent.

Minister of Justice Mr. Wijedasa Rajapaksa made the following statement after an event held in Colombo today (23) while answering the questions raised by the journalists.

“Many asked me to suspend the passage of the bill. I was informed that further discussion was required. When the draft was challenged before the Supreme Court, I informed the Attorney General that we will not take the draft forward. Instead, a discussion is given to the concerned parties. A decision is taken after discussion. It will be withdrawn in Parliament.”
