The motion of no confidence against the Speaker has been defeated in Parliament.
That is by 42 votes in the polling held in the Parliament a little while ago.
117 votes were received against the motion of no confidence.
Only 75 votes were received in favor of the motion.
The number of absentees for voting is 32.
Thus, due to the defeat of the motion of no confidence brought by the opposition, Mr. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena will continue to serve as Speaker.
