42 Families Evacuated – Risks of Attanagalu Oya and River Nilwala Overflowing

Amidst the persistent threat of landslides in the region, 42 families have been evacuated from the Beragala, Bathgoda area of Badulla district. Recent landslides have damaged two houses, prompting authorities to take swift action to ensure the safety of the residents.

According to the Badulla district secretary, displaced families have found refuge in a nearby school, while others have opted to stay with their relatives. The collapse of an earthen mound has also disrupted vehicular traffic on the Haputale-Yahalabedda road.

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has extended landslide warnings to six districts, including specific divisions in Badulla, Kandy, Hambantota, Kegalle, Matara, and Ratnapura. The NBRO continues to monitor vulnerable areas and issue timely warnings to mitigate risks.

In addition to landslides, concerns about overflowing rivers persist. The Irrigation Department has alerted residents living in lowlands near Attanagalu Oya and River Nilwala to exercise caution due to the possibility of overflowing waters.

The Department of Meteorology has also issued a warning, forecasting heavy rains exceeding 75 mm in many parts of the country today. As the rainy season intensifies, authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimize risks associated with adverse weather conditions.
