The mother and father of a child, who had been kept in a plastic basket in the toilet of the Meenagaya train, which was running to Batticaloa, were arrested in Bandarawela this morning.
The arrest was made at the home of the 10-day-old baby’s mother.
The passengers traveling in that train had handed over the baby to the train security department after finding the baby the previous day.
When this news was spread through social networks and the media, a person from Piliyandala called the police and said that the dress the child was wearing was a gift from him and he has the details of the baby’s parents.
The person also told the police that the baby and the parents were staying in a house belonging to this person on a rent basis.
According to the information the person gave to the police, the police and the special investigation department started investigating to find the baby’s parents.
Baby’s mother is from Bandarawela, and the father is from Koslanda.
Accordingly, the investigating officers found the two when they went to the Bandarawela house where the baby’s mother resided.
During the questioning of the investigating officers, the mother revealed all the details.
The baby’s mother works in a spa.
This child was later born out of a love affair with the baby’s father.
Since the baby is due, the two have rented a house in Piliyandala and have been staying there.
It has been revealed to the investigating officers that the couple left the child in the toilet and went to Bandarawela by train after giving birth to the child, as they were not married.
By now, the investigating officers have taken them to the Bandarawela Police.
Further legal proceedings are underway regarding the incident.
