Malinga’s school captain recollects fond memories

    0

Lasith Malinga, dubbed Yorker King, announced yesterday (September 14) that he would retire from international cricket.
Malinga who had retired from other formats of the game announced that he would do so from T20.

An old boy of Galle Mahinda College, Malinga, a genius in the game, participated in three big matches against Richmond College. He played under the captaincy of Geethanga Liyanage, Chatura Athukoralage and Tharindu Randima during his school cricket career.

Then Mahinda captain Tharindu Randima, in a Facebook post, said, “During practice sessions, I and Sumane are the early victims of your bowling. Otherwise, I or Rehan have this dreadful experience of facing your bowling.

I, wearing a broken helmet tied up with a piece of string, started shivering in deadly fear when I saw you pacing up on the matting wicket to bowl. Let alone Sumane and Reshan, it was deadly fearful to me. During every session, I got a bruise injury requiring the application of ice as treatment.

You did not shot scaring only us in the field. You had the courage and determined to scare the whole cricketing world. You challenged defeats. I remember a story narrated by you.

You said, “See, I will be the first to play for the country without playing for the area team.

You said it when you were denied a chance at provincial selection.

I, Sumane and Rehan, did not have words to describe our feelings when we learned that we had been selected but you dropped. Yet, you found your way to the target. After 17 years, you retire from the game making your name a brand.

Along with world cricket fans, I wish you all the best. I wish you success in the future. May Triple Gems bless you!

Sri Lankans receive bittersweet treatment from South African players

South Africa beat Sri Lanka 3-0 in a three-match Twenty20 cricket tournament tonight (14).

Batting first, the South Africans restricted the Sri Lankans to 120 runs taking 8 wickets at the R. Premadasa Stadium. South Africa scored 121 runs in 14.4 overs without conceding a single wicket.

For South Africa, Quinton de Kock scored 59 off 46 balls, including seven fours. Reeza Hendricks, who had a record partnership with him in the opening wicket, scored 56 off 42 balls. He graced his innings with five fours and one six.

No Sri Lankan bowler could keep their economy less than 7. Kusal Perera was the only successful player for Sri Lanka. He scored 39 off 33 balls.

This is the last Twenty20 tournament Sri Lanka has faced before the Twenty20 World Cup. Cricket commentators say that in order to maintain Sri Lanka’s name in world cricket, the Sri Lankan players need to enter the World Cup in a different strategy and play a different game.

Lasith Malinga, who captained Sri Lanka to the Twenty20 World Cup in 2014, also announced his retirement from Twenty20 matches today. That was before 48 hours passed after it was confirmed he would not be in the World Cup squad.

Sri Lanka briefs UNHRC about steps taken to address issues of concerns

    0

Sri Lanka today briefed the UNHRC about the steps taken by it to address the entire range of issues related to human rights, accountability and reconciliation.

Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris made the statement to the UNHRC at its 48th session.

He said , “Twelve years ago, Sri Lanka eradicated LTTE terrorism on its soil. We have restored peace, security and stability for the benefit of our people. We held firm to our democratic traditions and elections were held at regular intervals with high levels of voter participation – most recently at the 2019 Presidential and 2020 Parliamentary polls. The Government is committed to holding the Provincial Council elections at the earliest.

We are dealing with post-conflict recovery from the perspective of healing. Most recently, 16 LTTE cadres convicted of serious terrorist crimes were granted Presidential pardons. The success of post-conflict demining, reconstruction and resettlement programs has contributed immensely to national reconciliation.

Despite the daily challenges of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, let me highlight the progress made in the domestic processes:

    · The Office on Missing Persons (OMP) as its core function, is finalizing the list of missing persons in collaboration with other agencies.

    · The Office for Reparations (OR) has processed 3775 claims this year.

    · The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) continues its 8 point action plan.

    · The National Human Rights Commission is carrying on its mandate.

    · A steering committee on SDG 16 is working towards enhancing peace, justice and strong institutions.

    · A Cabinet Sub Committee was appointed to revisit the PTA and to bring it in line with international norms and best practices. A report will be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers at the end of this month. An Advisory Board was appointed to look into cases of detention under the PTA and to make recommendations to deal with such cases expeditiously. Speedy disposal of cases under the PTA is also taking place.

    · A Commission of Inquiry headed by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court was established to address issues on accountability and missing persons and to revisit recommendations by previous Commissions. The COI submitted its Interim Report to the President. The final report will be submitted within the next 06 months.

    · We are maintaining vigorous engagement with civil society to obtain their insights and to harness their support in achieving reconciliation and development.

    Madam President,

Sri Lanka continues to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of the appalling terrorist attack on Easter Sunday in 2019 complying with due process of law in all respects. As always, we will remain vigilant in combatting terrorism and protecting Sri Lankans of all religions.

    Madam President,

We reject the proposal for any external initiatives purportedly established by Resolution 46/1 while domestic processes are vigorously addressing the relevant matters. This will polarize our society, as we experienced with Resolution 30/1. The Council must adhere to its founding principles. External initiatives embarked upon without the cooperation of the country concerned cannot achieve their stated goals, and will be subject to politicization. The resources expended on this initiative are unwarranted, especially when they are urgently needed for humanitarian and other constructive purposes in many parts of the world.

    Madam President,

Under the current and pressing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we consider it a basic duty of a government to ensure the uninterrupted supply of commodities essential to the life of the community. We are open in acknowledging our challenges and as a responsible and democratic government, we are committed to achieving tangible progress on the entire range of issues relating to accountability, reconciliation, human rights, peace and sustainable development,”

New Zealand granted asylum to a person who provided money to Easter attackers

    0

A man has been granted asylum in New Zealand for allegedly unknowingly providing money to terrorists during the Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka, according to foreign reports.

The move comes after the country’s immigration and security tribunal confirmed that the man had not provided financial support to support terrorism and had acted as a money-transfer courier who did not know who received the money or where it came from.

It shows that he has made several transactions per month in a money transfer scheme involving his mother-in-law and a foreign broker.

His Tamil wife has been arrested following the Easter bombing in Sri Lanka in 2019. Later, she was released and the couple went into hiding and later flew to New Zealand on fake passports. According to reports, they were granted asylum in June on an appeal.

The tribunal ruled that their testimony was ‘reliable, consistent and powerful’.

The report further states that both the wife and the husband are afraid of being harmed by the Sri Lankan authorities as the husband is involved in a money transfer system that the authorities trust in connection with the persons involved in the Easter 2019 terrorist attack.

It said the man’s ignorance of the money exchanging business he was involved in was the ‘fundamental’ reason. He was not a broker, but a courier who took money from brokers in Colombo and deposited it in banks, and he was involved with the account details given to him by a foreign broker through his mother-in-law.

He told the court that it was a side business that lasted for nearly a year but the authorities saw him as a traitor.

The husband is a Sinhalese and the foreign broker is a Sri Lankan Muslim. The wife’s sister is married to a Muslim.

The woman’s husband thinks some of the accounts in which he deposited the money may have been linked to people involved in the attacks.

However, the report further states that he has no idea about this and does not know if he has any connection with anyone involved in the attack.

President to attend UNGA on 17th

    0

Cabinet Spokesman Dullas Alahaperuma says it is important for President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to attend the UN General Assembly at a time when the country is under criticism at the UN Human Rights Council.

He points out that the President’s visit to New York and the visit of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to Italy are the first two foreign trips in a long time.

The 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA76) begins today (14). The President will visit USA on the 17th.

Despite the global epidemic, the summit was attended by leaders from many countries.

The first day of the debate at the General Assembly session is Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

In the past as well as in the future the government has stopped participating in many foreign tours and used technology to attend those meetings. The Minister said that only the essential foreign trips were made.

He stressed the importance of the Prime Minister’s visit to Italy at the invitation of foreign organizations and the President’s forthcoming visit to the United Nations, despite the current situation in the country, adding that “it would not be detrimental to the country to go with a small delegation to attend the UN General Assembly at this time.”

Candidates bribing voters to be disqualified

    0

Moneragala High Court Judge Ranga Dissanayake delivered a landmark judgment on September 13, 2021, disqualifying a candidate convicted of bribing voters, Daily Mirror reported quoting a statement from People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections(PAFFREL) said.

As the Daily Mirror reported, PAFFREL said the judgment was given in respect to a case filed in collaboration with the losing candidate and the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence against a candidate of one of the local government bodies in the Moneragala District for offering various kinds of bribes to the voters at the last local government elections.

The judgment declared the candidate who had purportedly won the seat by bribing the voters as null and void. He was removed by order of the Court and the candidate who had secured the next highest number of votes was ordered to be appointed to fill the vacant position.

This historic ruling will serve as a deterrent to future candidates in bribing the voters. Even if they continue to bribe, their election will be liable to be challenged subsequently. In addition, the need for enacting laws to limit election expenses by candidates and provision of a level playing field for all candidates in an election has been re-emphasized, the PAFFREL said.

Also, it is important to note that the implementation of the Right to Information Act has paved the way for procuring the information required for this legal victory.

The beauty of the New Kelani Bridge

    0

The new Kelani Bridge, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka to be constructed using high-tech cables, was illuminated and tested to attract local and foreign tourists on the instructions of the Minister in charge of the subject, Johnston Fernando, last night (13).

In 2014, when Mahinda Rajapaksa was the President and the Minister of Highways, the preliminary plans for the new Kelani Bridge were prepared and agreements were signed.

This new Kelani Bridge is a major factor in enhancing the beauty of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. The Minister also said that the lighting would help to show the beauty of the Kelani River and the bridge.

Therefore, constructors have been advised to pay attention to the new technologies used to beautify bridges in developed countries and to apply those techniques to the new Kelani Bridge if they are suitable for our country.
