A five-member police committee has been appointed to study the full report of the Presidential Commission on the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks, which has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the directive of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The committee, chaired by Senior Deputy Inspector General and Attorney Asanka Karawita, was appointed by Acting Inspector General of Police, Attorney Priyantha Weerasooriya. Its purpose is to initiate prompt investigations and legal action based on findings in the report.
Other members include DIG P. Ampavila (CID), SSP Shani Abeysekara (Central Criminal Division), Director Imesha Muthumala (CID), and Director H.D.K.S. Perera (Counter-Terrorism Division).
The report spans over 66,300 pages across five volumes. According to a senior police officer, the review process began on April 22. Six sub-committees with about eight officers each have also been formed to analyze specific sections.
Despite the scale of the task, the teams are working around the clock to uncover any critical information that may have previously gone undetected and to take swift legal action where required.
Police Spokesman SSP Buddika Manatunga confirmed in a statement that relevant investigations and legal proceedings against those responsible will be carried out as soon as possible.
