Anuradhapura Magistrate Nalaka Sanjeewa today (9th) ordered the remand custody of Anuradhapura Prison Superintendent Mohan Karunaratne until the day after tomorrow (11th).
Karunaratne was arrested yesterday on allegations of presenting false information to secure the release of an inmate under a presidential pardon. He was produced before the court today.
The inmate in question, who had been convicted in connection with a financial fraud case, was released during the recent Vesak Poya day under the pretense of a presidential pardon. However, the Presidential Secretariat later informed the Police Criminal Investigation Department that no approval had been granted for the release of such a prisoner.
