Colombo – A 42-year-old man has been arrested by the Wellawatte Police in connection with a threatening phone call made to the Airport Police Station yesterday (June 11), in which he falsely claimed that an aircraft arriving in Sri Lanka from Indonesia was going to be hijacked.
According to police, the suspect is a resident of Modara Road, Colombo 15, and is reported to have no stable source of income. Investigations revealed that he is addicted to drugs and was under the influence at the time of the call.
He was arrested while staying in a hotel room in Wellawatte, which he had checked into shortly after making the threatening call.
Police further uncovered that the suspect’s expenses were being funded by his girlfriend living abroad, and that he was using this money primarily to purchase and consume narcotics.
Authorities have confirmed that the threat was a hoax, but said legal action would be taken under laws pertaining to public safety and false threats.
