A tough decision from the President about the control price of rice

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that there are no plans to change the controlled price of rice.

He pointed out that there is a long-term plan being implemented to provide more benefits to farmers.

President Dissanayake made these comments during a discussion held yesterday (22) at the Presidential Secretariat with rice traders and officials from the Department of Agriculture.

The current prices of consumer goods were a key focus of the discussion, particularly the need to maintain the controlled price of rice, which is a staple food for the people.

The President emphasized that since paddy had already been purchased from farmers following the imposition of the controlled price, it would be unfair to now change the price of rice.

He further highlighted the need for a proper mechanism to ensure that paddy is purchased from farmers at a fair price and that rice is sold to consumers at a reasonable price.

President Dissanayake noted that the artificial rise in rice prices was a result of not maintaining controlled prices in the long term, leading to price instability.

The discussion also addressed issues regarding stockpilers and the need to register such intermediaries, for which the President directed the agricultural officials to take necessary steps.

Additionally, attention was given to reducing the cost of loans for small and medium-sized rice mill owners to help them overcome financial difficulties.

Representatives from rice mill owners’ associations, including Dudley Sirisena, Nipuna Gamlath, Mithrapala Lankeshwara, Jayasiri Gunathilake, and Menaka Gamlath, along with officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, participated in the discussion.
