According to party sources, only 16 members of parliament representing the party have participated in the Sri Lanka Podujana Peremuna Politburo meeting chaired by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today (29).
The proposal that a candidate from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna should be nominated for this year’s presidential election has been submitted to the Politburo by Party Secretary Mr. Sagara Kariyawasam.
Out of all the MPs who participated in the motion, 11 voted against it.
Political sources say that apart from the 16 members of parliament, most of the people who participated in the politburo meeting were brought from various organizations.
The sources also say that even the daughter of the former chairperson of the Mahara Regional Council, who is not a member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s political committee, has participated in today’s political committee meeting.
However, it is special that the name of Mr. Dhammika Perera, who was hoping for the position of presidential candidate in Pohottuwa, was not mentioned in the Politburo meeting.
Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that this is the party’s decision and everyone should agree to it.
