The Colombo High Court has today ordered the release of Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero, secretary of the Bodubala Sena organization, who is serving a 4-year prison sentence, on bail.
That is according to the order given by the Court of Appeal.
Gnanasara Thero has submitted an appeal to the Court of Appeal against the sentence.
Colombo High Court Judge Adithya Patabedige had recently rejected a bail request made by Gnanasara Thero to release him on bail until the appeal is heard and a final decision is announced.
According to the High Court order, the Court of Appeal heard a revision petition submitted by Gnanasara Thero and later ordered that he be released on a cash bail of 50 thousand rupees and two personal sureties of 5 lakh rupees each.
According to the order of the Court of Appeal, he has been released on bail by the judge of the Colombo High Court today.
On March 30, the Colombo High Court sentenced Gnanasara Thero to two charges of insulting Islam and disturbing religious harmony through comments he made at a press conference held in Colombo in 2016 about the Kuragala Temple.
