The 22nd Constitutional Amendment has been gazetted.
That is according to the order of President Ranil Wickramasinghe.
Regarding the term of office of the President, this amendment has been brought to replace the word ‘exceeding 06 years’ with the word ‘exceeding 05 years’ mentioned in Article 83 (b) of the Constitution.
The gazette has been issued noting the date yesterday (18) against the backdrop of Justice Minister Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa’s announcement yesterday (18) that it will not be gazetted.
Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake had also said that there is no obstacle to the announcement of the presidential election by gazetting the 22nd constitutional amendment.
The relevant gazette notification is below.
