The proposal made by President Ranil Wickramasinghe to amend the existing constitution regarding the tenure of the President and the duration of the Parliament in the Constitution has been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
It has been observed that there is an inconsistency in Articles 30(2), 62(2) and 83(b) of the Constitution regarding the tenure of the President and the tenure of the Parliament.
For the avoidance of doubt and to remove any inconsistency, it is hereby proposed to substitute the words “exceeding six years” with the words “exceeding five years”.
Accordingly, the proposal presented by the President to prepare a constitutional amendment bill to amend Article 83(b) of the Constitution was thus approved by the Council of Ministers.
