Secretary of the Ministry of Irrigation Mr. Saman Darshana Padikorala said that before the end of the year, 53000 Urumaya freehold deeds for Mahaweli lands will be given to the people.
He said that the Mahaweli Authority has taken over the deeds that were previously used by the farmers.
The secretary said that the deeds are to be given for paddy fields and land.
He said that freehold deeds will be given to the farmers instead of the licenses given so far.
He also mentioned that by giving freehold deeds, farmers will be able to confirm their ownership of the land.
