The Attorney General’s Department is going to file a lawsuit in a Singapore court today (24) to seek compensation for the environmental damage caused by the sinking of the Xpress Pearl ship in Sri Lankan waters.
This ship caught fire in the sea near Colombo port on May 20, 2021.
The ship was carrying 1,486 containers of chemicals when it caught fire. At the time of the fire, a large number of containers were destroyed.
It was revealed in the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Environment held last April 4 that there are only 45 days left to prosecute this ship.
It is reported that the report was sent to the Marine Environment Authority last week after calculating the total damage caused to the sea and the coast of the country to get a compensation amount of 6.2 billion dollars.
